I highly recommend buying a Weber Copper Cap to replace the tube with(same price or less than a tube), and will not affect the sound of the amp at all, but will increase its liability drastically. The rectifier tube in this amp can go out as they(tubes) are not built like they used to be. The amps initially had a couple of glitches, which were fixed years ago, and now are both reliable and great sounding. There are simple things you can do to improve the sound, or more serious things that you can have done to it to make it sound more like a "different/better" one. There are many good suggestions, advice, and options discussed here by folks using all the different types of Vox amps made through the years. Go to the "Plexi palace" website, and click on "Vox" for more information.

They are indeed a pain in the butt to replace the tubes, and you may need to make an easy mod to the "Top boost" channel to make it more "pedal friendly", as the amp can get extremely bright. I found it informative and helpfull in deciding whether or not to buy one.

Go to North Coast Music, they have a side by side comparison on circuit and build, so you can see for yourself what the differences and similarities are.

I'm an amp tech and I have to admit I hate working on them, but actually they aren't as unreliable as some other amps I can think of, and at least one minor issue was fixed shortly after they came out. The biggest problem with them is that changing tubes is a real pain in the **** because of the way the amp section is fitted into the cabinet - it's not something you can do in five minutes or in an emergency/gig situation. They have suffered reliability problems mostly due to poor quality tubes, but that's something most amp companies are having trouble with nowadays. It doesn't have quite the amazing complex bright but warm three-dimensional tone of the originals or even the 90s reissue, and it doesn't have the wonderful Vib/Trem channel - the tremolo has better speed control but is inferior sounding - but if you want an AC30 for more straight ahead clean/dirty rock playing rather than swirly atmospheric stuff it's probably more usable simply because of the master volume.īuild quality isn't bad at all, slightly different but no worse than a 90s model, and in some ways not really any worse (though very different) from an original, which have their own issues even discounting age. It isn't quite the same, but it does give a lot of the characteristic sound of a Vox with a lot of useful modern features that the old ones or the 90s reissues don't have - master volume, reverb, FX loop, and a couple of switchable options to fine-tune the power section. The AC30CC is a pretty good amp that's at least as close to an old AC30 as any other modern amp using a different circuit and construction methods.
